Salford Diocese Welcomes All!

June 2006

Over 600 lay people and clergy from 165 parishes in Salford Diocese recently attended presentations by the Department for Evangelisation to launch a new Diocesan programme - 'Welcome, Family Friendly Parishes.

The programme is part of a 3 year national plan of action launched by the Bishop's of England & Wales, which aims to respond to the needs outlined by our parish communities through various Diocesan and National consultation programmes.

The 3 year programme will cover the following:
" Welcome, family friendly parishes (2006)
" Marriage and family spirituality (2007)
" Helping parents and grandparents to pass on faith in God (2008)

In his introduction, Bishop Brain says that he hopes the programme will enable us to come together as the family of God in Salford Diocese, to reflect and celebrate all the positive aspects of what it means to be a welcoming community.

The programme was presented to each of the thirteen deaneries in our Diocese during April and May by a team led by Fr Paul Cannon, Head of the Department for Evangelisation.

Each Parish received a 'welcome pack' with a DVD containing an overview slide presentation, a video introduction by the Bishop and a prayer reflection set to music on how 'welcome' is highlighted in the scriptures. This was supported by a materials and handouts specifically designed to help guide each parish through a period of reflection, audit and action in their own communities.

Fr Cannon said: "When Bishop Brain asked us to look at this programme, we wanted to create something that recognised the diversity of our Diocese in a way that enthused and engaged everyone. Whilst building on the foundations of the National programme, we felt it was important to create something that was simple, effective and tailored to the specific needs of our parish communities."

He added: "The response so far has been extremely positive and encouraging. With over 85% of our Diocese now fully engaged with the programme I am sure that Salford will be recognised as a Diocese that truly strives to welcome all people!"
