Salford Diocese Under 18's Vocations Group.

We are a newly formed group for lads aged 14 to 17 years who want to know more about the priesthood in Salford Diocese. We first met in November 2007 and we plan to meet every six weeks or so on a Satuirday afternoon.

There is a team of adults who lead the meetings which are currently held at St. Dunstan's Church, Moston in Manchester. The team includes Fr David, the Vocations Director and a younger priest.

So far we have had input about the vocations stories of the two priests. We have watched a video called "Fishers of men" and we have also received an input from a young Seminarian who was on placement at St. Dunstan's. The sessions end with a short time of prayer in the Sacred Heart Chapel of the Church.

If you would like to more about this group please contact

Fr. David Featherstone Tel: 0161 681 1410

Thoughts and reflections from our March 2008 meeting

At our meeting of 1st March, we invited Steve O'Connor, an RE teacher at Cardinal Langley High School in Middleton, to give the group an input on prayer.

Steve has a great sense of humour and we very much enjoyed his wise-cracks over lunch. Then after lunch he give us some great direction about prayer. He spoke of the need for every commited Christian to pray. He suggested giving 15 minutes of time to the Lord each day. If our lives are too busy then we need to get up 15 minutes earlier in the morning and give that time to God. For a structure to prayer, Steve advised using the Gospel text for daily Mass (which can be found from the Daily Missal or from the Diocesan liturgy website www.salfordliturgy.org/weekdays.htm.

He went on then to say that God is always trying to speak to us and we often just don't give Him a chance to do so even when we pray. This is because we often think prayer is just about us speaking to God or asking Him to help us. This type of prayer is important however we equally need to give time to just listen to God ~ in that silence God can speak to us.

Introducing this discipline to our life style will help any young person to discern what God is inviting us to do with our lives. This obviously includes a vocation to the priesthood and religious life. We are all very grateful for this input from Steve.
