History of the Centre

photo: Centre for Church and Industry, Trafford Park, Manchester M17 1JF, England

Founded in 1979 the Centre is unique as the only Centre for Church and Industry in the British Isles.

The building is situated in the middle of the world's first purpose built Industrial estate, established in 1896 and known as "Trafford Park" in Manchester, England. It was the largest manufacturing complex in western Europe, dominated by large British and American heavy engineering and manufacturing and at its peak employed 80,000 workers.

The Centre's situation, on Eleventh Street reflects the American influence when the "village" was built. The village was populated up to 1981.

The Centre's Catholic origin's derive from its long, and ongoing, association with the Salford Diocesan parish of St Antony's of Padua, Trafford Park, Manchester; the Centre building originally served as the parish primary school [1912-1981 ].

The Centre for Church and Industry operates as a registered charity [ 250037-R ].
